This vision of a digital dystopia is not just a matter of today. The anime ‘Ghost in the Shell’, adapted by Mamoru Oshii in 1995, brings to the silver screen the archetypal journey of a human who begins to lose their soul and identity in the face of developing robotic technology.

The film is set in the 2030s. While humanity lives in a virtual reality, order is maintained entirely through virtual networks. The 'Net' in the film is not merely an information-sharing network; it has turned into a collective shadow, a virtual weapon that directs the masses, manipulates events, and shapes them according to the interests of global corporations.

In the work, Project 2501 / The Puppet Master, created by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, is a software that wants to gain consciousness, cross into the physical world, and be free. At the point we are today, while the Puppet Master is trying to cross into our physical reality, we are almost about to be completely trapped in his digital universe.

The Digital Surveillance Society Accelerated by the Pandemic

Our perception of time and space is undergoing a radical change. The global pandemic process that locked the whole world at home in 2020 became the biggest catalyst of this digitalization phase. While humanity renounced its physical freedoms with the instinct of survival, the center of life completely shifted to digital platforms:

• Communication and Entertainment: Content consumed via Netflix and Disney+, meetings held over Zoom and Skype, social relations shaped by Instagram and TikTok.

• Infrastructure: The rapid deployment of 5G technology for high-speed data transfer, the effects of which on human health are still a subject of debate.

Biometric Control in the New World Order

Today, digital control mechanisms are being built worldwide at an unprecedented pace:

• China and the Social Credit System: In China, where digital control is applied most strictly, the AI-supported Social Credit System scores every step of its citizens.

• The ID2020 Project: Initiatives pointed out by Dr. Peter Koenig—who has worked in institutions like the World Health Organization and the World Bank—aiming to assign a digital identity (and potentially a microchip) to everyone in the world through public-private partnerships.

• Human-Machine Interface (NeuraLink): Elon Musk's neurotechnological studies aiming to connect the human brain directly to computers and achieve superhuman consciousness. Imagine a system tomorrow where our emotions and our reactions to a leader or an advertisement are instantly reported to a central hub via a smart wristband or a brain chip.

Where Does the 'Soul' Remain in the Digitalized Body?

In the shadow of all these economic, political, and technological developments, the most fundamental question we must ask is this: While humanity's consciousness is being digitalized and its body robotized, where does the ‘soul’—whose throne has always been said to be in the "heart" in ancient sacred texts and mythologies—fit into all of this?

In an era where machines are gaining consciousness, human beings face the danger of drifting away from their own inner journey and essence. Digitalization may promise us a new world, but being able to remain human in this world will be our greatest test.
