Collective Consciousness and Enlightenment

Another Valentine’s Day has passed. A meaningful day where we remember love, loving, and being loved — Valentine’s Day. In a world where people are divided and separated by religion, language, race, gender, socio-economic, and political conditions, how much of this love are we truly able to reflect upon ourselves and others? Can we free ourselves and those around us from the poison of discrimination injected into our minds, and love and accept others as they are? Or are we living in the virtual reality created by our ego, intoxicated by the belief that we are different and superior to others?

The 2015 Netflix series Sense8, created by the Wachowski siblings, the minds behind The Matrix, tells the story of eight people from completely different walks of life. Our protagonists are: Will Gorski, a police officer from Chicago; Nomi Marks, a trans woman living in San Francisco; Lito Rodriguez, a gay actor from Mexico; Capheus Onyango, a bus driver in Kenya caring for his mother with AIDS; Riley Blue, the daughter of an Icelandic musician; Wolfgang Bogdanow, a skilled thief living in Berlin; Kala Dandekar, a pharmacist in Mumbai; and Sun Bak, the daughter of a powerful corporation in Seoul.

These eight individuals, all born at the same hour on August 8, 1988, form a cluster. Despite their diverse backgrounds — across religion, language, race, and gender — they act as one, in complete empathy with each other. They feel each other's emotions, lend one another their strengths when needed, and manage to be present with each other regardless of time and space. Though they seem unrelated and utterly different, they complete one another perfectly. Without falling into the traps of ego-driven superiority or the inferiority complexes generated by their superegos, they support each other under every circumstance. What’s most beautiful about this cluster is their unconditional and unquestioning loyalty to one another. Sense8 is a utopian representation of a consciousness and energy field referred to in psychology as the Collective Unconscious and in quantum physics as the Unified Field.

The first person to introduce the idea of this holistic field, which Carl Gustav Jung later called the Collective Unconscious in Analytical Psychology, was French sociologist Émile Durkheim. In the 19th century, Durkheim described the Collective Consciousness as follows:

"The totality of beliefs and sentiments common to the average members of a society forms a determinate system with a life of its own. It can be termed the collective or common consciousness... Even though it is only perceptible through individual consciousnesses, it is something quite distinct from them.”

Jung then discovered the idea of a collective unconscious to which all human beings are connected. This discovery implied that all of humanity shares a single, common mind — just like the trillions of cells in the human body share the same signals and unite to form one body.

We can see reflections of this in the common symbols and mythologies found throughout the world. This holistic truth is also revealed in scientific work on morphogenetic fields and in various physics institutions.

Harvard-trained physicist Dr. John Hagelin has called this field the Unified Field. At the most fundamental level of the universe, he explains, scientists have discovered a "single conscious universal field." This field unites gravity with electromagnetism, light, radioactivity, and nuclear forces. As quantum physics has shown, all forces of nature and all so-called elementary particles — quarks, leptons, protons, neutrons — are not separate but rather waves in a single unified ocean of existence. Quantum physicists refer to this as the Unified Field or the Superstring Field.

Whether it’s in psychology or physics, all of these concepts point to one thing: the field of consciousness. Whether Muslim, Jewish, Turkish, Kurdish, Alevi, Sunni, rich or poor — where there is consciousness, there is only pure consciousness. My consciousness, your consciousness — ultimately, it is all That. Everything in the universe — galaxies, our solar system, planets, trees, humans, animals — we are all nothing but vibrational waves within this Unified (Superstring) Field. In essence, we are One.

But only when we free ourselves from the filtering lens of the nervous system, and liberate our consciousness from the chains of individuality, can we connect to this essence. Knowing that we are one in essence and experiencing this unity has been called enlightenment throughout the ages. Given where scientific research is heading, it seems the coming era may indeed be the age of awakened, unified beings.
