Göbeklitepe and Meaningful Coincidences

We were at Göbeklitepe, a site with a 12,000-year-old past that has had a nearly shocking impact on world history. After touring this mystical and mysterious temple, we decided it was time to head back. Yet, just like our arrival, we had no idea how we would return!

The date was January 1, 2014. It had been less than 24 hours since we had watched the whole world ring in the new year with fireworks, starting from the Kiribati Islands. My psychotherapist friend and I were 18 kilometers away from the city center of Urfa, standing at Göbeklitepe. After exploring this mystical and enigmatic sanctuary, we had decided it was time to leave. But how to return—just like how we had arrived—remained completely uncertain!

I knew I wanted to visit Göbeklitepe, but I had no idea how. All the tourism agencies were closed. There was not yet any transportation line established to bring visitors to this archaeological treasure. It was the first day of the new year, and the only vehicle that could take us there was a city bus. That bus, however, could only drop us off at a desolate roadside marked with a sign that read “Göbeklitepe 12 km.”

If it hadn’t been for the villagers who happened to drive by and kindly gave us a lift, we were determined to walk the entire distance. But now it was time to descend from the hill. One of the villagers, who had to continue on to their village another 20 kilometers beyond Göbeklitepe, naturally asked me: “How will you get back to Urfa?” Besides us, there were two other young men who seemed to be in their mid-twenties, and apart from the villagers’ car, the only other vehicle at the site likely belonged to them. So I went over and asked if they could possibly give us a ride back to the roadside junction on their way out. They replied that they were heading all the way to the Urfa city center and would be happy to take us along.

While my own situation was obvious, I was curious as to what had brought these young men there. Once we got into the car, I asked why they had chosen to spend the very first day of the new year at Göbeklitepe. The young driver, whom we learned was an electronics engineer, said he was interested in yoga. He explained that he wanted to share some of this with his friend, also an engineer visiting from Hatay to celebrate the new year, and take him to see Göbeklitepe at the same time.

The word “yoga” immediately caught both my psychotherapist friend’s and my attention, and we exchanged a glance. I could sense the story was about to become even more intriguing, so I asked what kind of yoga practice he was doing. He told me that a friend of his named Anıl in Adana had given him an experience of enlightenment through a yoga technique based on Kundalini Energy. He went on to say that he had been telling his visiting friend from Hatay about Kundalini and the idea of enlightenment.

He added that Anıl had learned this method from his cousin named Arda, and that in fact they wanted to meet him someday. At this, my psychotherapist friend and I froze for a moment, not knowing what to say. Because Anıl was my cousin. Back in 2008, while preparing for his university exams in Adana, he had stayed with me, and I had shared with him what I knew about yoga. When I told the young men that I was Arda, and Anıl was indeed my cousin, they too were momentarily shocked.

Is it any wonder that the four of us, after briefly reflecting on the mysteries and history of Göbeklitepe, were equally astonished at this incredible coincidence? What do you think? Could there be an explanation for this “coincidence” that brought together four people from different corners of Turkey—none of whom knew about the others—on New Year’s Day, right there at Göbeklitepe?

The TV series “Touch,” created by Tim Kring and released in 2012, is precisely about such coincidences:

“The ratio is always the same. Over and over again—1 to 1.618. The mathematical design hidden behind reality. You just have to know where to look. What most people see as chaos, is actually a series of events following one another along a fine line: galaxies, plants, seashells.Patterns reflect truth. But only a few among us can see how the pieces fit together. On this small planet, 6,919,377,000 people live. This is the story of some of them…In Chinese mythology, there is a belief called the Red Thread of Fate. According to it, the gods tie a red string around every person’s ankle, connecting them to those they are destined to meet. The string may stretch, tangle, but it never breaks. Through mathematical calculations, all of this can be predetermined. And it is my job to record these numbers, to maintain the connections between people whose lives are destined to intersect.Exactly 4,160 days ago, on October 26, 2000, I was born. I have been alive for 11 years, 4 months, 21 days, and 14 hours. In all that time, I have never spoken a single word.”

These are the words of our protagonist Jake, an 11-year-old autistic boy who lost his mother on the day he was born and lives alone with his father. Jake cannot speak, communicates only through numbers, and has the special ability to perceive events before they happen.

So how does science and psychology view what Jake is describing? The answer will be in the next article…
