What Are Isaac Asimov’s 3 Laws of Robotics?
When talking about the robotic revolution, we cannot skip the legendary name of sci-fi literature, chemistry professor Isaac Asimov. Considered one of the "Big Three" science fiction writers of his time, Asimov penned the famous three laws to regulate the relationship between robots and humans:
The Law of Non-Harm: A robot may not injure a human being or, through inaction, allow a human being to come to harm.
The Law of Obedience: A robot must obey the orders given it by human beings except where such orders would conflict with the First Law.
The Law of Self-Preservation: A robot must protect its own existence as long as such protection does not conflict with the First or Second Laws. (For example, it can sacrifice itself to save a human).
Hollywood's Prophecy of the Future: The Movie "I, Robot"
Starring Will Smith and adapted from Asimov's work, the 2004 movie "I, Robot" opens with these three famous rules. The film takes place in 2035, in a world where robots play a massive role in society.
Del Spooner from the Chicago Police Department is investigating a robot suspected of killing its creator (Dr. Miles Hogenmiller) in violation of Asimov's laws. The movie—featuring holograms, bluetooth headsets, and the danger of an AI-controlled revolution—is almost like a trailer for our current world and possible future. If our hero fails, the world will fall under the control of artificial intelligence.
Sounds creepy, right? But is this just a movie script, or an approaching reality? Let's listen to the warnings made by experts throughout history.
Through the Eyes of Experts: Technological Singularity and the Intelligence Explosion
Let's travel back in time a bit. Years ago, scientists foresaw these days and made some serious warnings.
1. I.J. Good and the Intelligence Explosion (1960s)
In the 1960s, evaluating the consequences of superhuman intelligence, I.J. Good summarized the situation as follows:
"Let an ultraintelligent machine be defined as a machine that can far surpass all the intellectual activities of any man however clever. Since the design of machines is one of these intellectual activities, an ultraintelligent machine could design even better machines; there would then unquestionably be an 'intelligence explosion,' and the intelligence of man would be left far behind. Thus the first ultraintelligent machine is the last invention that man need ever make."
2. Vernor Vinge and the Post-Human Era (1993)
At the NASA Vision-21 Symposium in 1993, academic Vernor Vinge from San Diego State University drew attention to the concept of the Technological Singularity:
"Within thirty years, we will have the technological means to create superhuman intelligence. Shortly after, the human era will be ended."
3. Elon Musk and the "Immortal Dictator" Threat (2018)
Fast-forwarding closer to the present, to 2018, we encounter these words from tech genius Elon Musk in the documentary 'Do You Trust This Computer':
"AI created by authoritarian regimes will be the greatest threat facing humanity. We could create an immortal dictator from which we would never escape!"
Moreover, 116 AI and robotics experts, including Musk and Mustafa Suleyman, wrote a letter to the United Nations warning humanity that autonomous weapons could lead to a "third revolution in warfare."
Why Does the Time Machine Always Point to the Same Place?
I was planning to present a more hopeful future scenario in this article, but our time machine keeps taking us to the dark dawn of robotic revolutions. Perhaps it is high time we heeded the collective outcry of tech masters and sci-fi writers.
